DS3181 is the commercial-temperature, single-port member of Maxim's DS318x ATM/packet physical-layer family. It integrates a DS3/E3 framer, cell and packet processing, and a line interface unit in a 400-lead TE-PBGA.
The unsuffixed DS3181 is distinct from the DS3181N industrial grade and the DS3181+ lead-free option.
The DS3181 maps and demaps ATM cells and HDLC packets over a single DS3, E3 or clear-channel 52 Mbps copper interface. Its integrated line interface unit performs receive clock/data recovery and transmit waveshaping, while framer and processor blocks bridge the line to a system-side UTOPIA or POS-PHY interface. Analog Devices identifies this legacy Maxim device as obsolete.
Receiver recovery and transmitter pulse shaping reduce the number of separate line-side functions.
Dedicated processing maps ATM cells and HDLC packets to DS3/E3 physical streams.
Jitter attenuation can be placed in the receive or transmit path when the LIU is enabled.
The DS318x family uses a common 400-lead package concept for one to four ports; migration still requires pin and system review.
DS3-framed, E3-framed and clear-channel paths are documented.
UTOPIA Level 2/3 and POS-PHY Level 2/3 or SPI-3 interface options are documented.
The family supports direct, PLCP, DSS and clear-channel ATM cell mapping.
Designs use 75-ohm coaxial interfaces with specified transmit and receive transformers.
Maxim ordering information specifies the unsuffixed DS3181 as a 400-lead TE-PBGA, 27 mm by 27 mm with 1.27 mm pitch. LCDChip lists 400-BBGA, and the package register maps that catalog name to 400-BBGA.jpg. The local JPG is absent; package artwork and land-pattern verification remain open.

Do not publish until the registered JPG and exact footprint are checked.
The Maxim data sheet contains a DS3181-specific 400-ball assignment table. These functional groups summarize connectivity but do not replace the numbered ball map.
Transmit and receive paths connect through the specified transformers to the DS3/E3 copper interface.
UTOPIA or POS-PHY data, control and clock signals exchange cells or packets with the switch or controller.
Control and status pins support device configuration, monitoring and test.
Supply, ground and reference-clock connections must follow the original electrical and layout guidance.
Verify every ball number and revision-specific erratum before changing a board.

Use the data sheet for electrical limits, clocking, package drawing and revision errata.
DS3181N has an industrial temperature range; DS3181+ is a separate lead-free ordering option. The multiport DS3182–DS3184 family can share a package concept but is not automatically interchangeable. Verify ball map, firmware register configuration, supply rails, line transformers, framing mode, timing, compliance and lot revision before substitution. No unverified internal alternative link is included.
The Analog Devices product page and hosted Maxim Rev. 3 data sheet are the primary technical sources. The ordering table distinguishes unsuffixed DS3181 from DS3181N and the optional plus suffix. Analog Devices calls DS3181 obsolete; marketplace listings may describe their own inventory as active and should not be mistaken for a manufacturer lifecycle statement.
Single-port DS3/E3 line-card interfaces for legacy transport systems.
Cell and packet mapping between network lines and system-side buses.
Framed telecom data transport in installed infrastructure.
Qualified spare for equipment designed around the exact device.
Inspect the complete DS3181 marking, package and ball condition, revision, date and lot code, storage history and supply-chain traceability. The obsolete designation and documented errata make revision and lot checks important. This listing does not claim that stock was electrically retested or factory authorized.
One; DS3182, DS3183 and DS3184 are the two-, three- and four-port family members.
Yes. The integrated LIU provides line-side receive and transmit functions described by Maxim.
No. The N suffix denotes a different industrial-temperature order code.
No. The registered 400-BBGA.jpg is absent locally.
Keep this detail under review until the 400-BBGA JPG, exact TE-PBGA footprint, revision errata, lot traceability and current qualified distributor price are verified. Do not publish while any gate remains open.
